Offers at the Local Chase Bank Branch: Chase Sapphire Preferred, United Explorer

I stopped by my Chase local branch today to compare the credit card offers to what we have available to us online. While nothing dramatic or spectacular happened, I did find a lower spending requirement offer for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card a non-targeted offer for the Chase United MileagePlus® Explorer Card for up to 65,000 miles. I always want to share the best possible offer I can find; otherwise, we may all be leaving miles or optimization opportunities on the table.

Update: One of my readers later found an offer for a no-annual fee United Club card at the local bank branch as well. Details are here.

Note: All the offers mentioned below are offers I saw at the physical bank branch on my visit. I do not know whether they are still available nor should anyone expect the same offers when applying for the same credit card online. These have their own terms.

At the bank, I looked at the offers for the Chase Freedom Card®, Chase Ink Bold® Business Charge Card, Chase Ink Plus® Business card, Chase Sapphire Preferred® and Chase United Explorer Cards. For the first three cards, the offers in the branch were exactly the same as what we have online so I won’t go through them here again. I’ll just discuss the Chase Sapphire Preferred offer and the Chase United MileagePlus® Explorer Card offer.

I do not know whether Chase local bank offers are specific to my location or state or whether these are available everywhere. For the offers I found, I specifically verified that one does not need to have a banking or loan account with Chase bank in order to be eligible for the offer.

Chase Sapphire Preferred

The best offer I’ve been able to find online has a sign-up bonus of 40,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after spending $3,000 in 3 months. The one in the bank has the exact same sign-up bonus, but only a $2,000 minimum spending requirement. While this isn’t anything spectacular, it does lighten the load in terms of spending requirement.

Chase United MileagePlus Explorer Card

The current public offer for the Chase United Explorer Card is for only 30,000 miles. Offer details:

  • 50,000 United miles + $50 statement credit after spending $1,000 within 3 months
  • 5,000 United miles for adding an authorized user
  • 10,000 United miles after spending at least $25,000 in one year

While the bank’s offer is not as good as the targeted offer above, it is better than the public offer for the card:

  • 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $2,000
  • 5,000 United miles for adding an authorized user
  • 10,000 United miles after spending at least $25,000 in one year

Chase United Club Card

While I didn’t find a better offer for this card at the bank, Do It For the Points posted this morning about a targeted first year-fee waived offer for the United Club Card. The main benefit for this card is a United Club Membership. This provides unlimited access to all United Club locations and participating Star Alliance affiliated lounges worldwide. The usual annual fee for this card is $395 a year so a year waived is a significant savings.

The card also earns 1.5 United miles per dollar spent on the card and provides two free checked bags, priority check-in, priority boarding and priority security.

I am unlikely to apply for this card as I already have lounge access internationally with my elite status and I avoid any stops when flying domestically. However, for heavy domestic traveler or travelers without elite status, it can be an excellent option. While Do It For The Points hypothesizes that this offer may only be available to elite members, it may be worth checking if you enjoy relaxing in the lounges on your travels!

Summary

  • The local Chase bank branch has an offer for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card that offers 40,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points after spending $2,000 in 3 months. This is better than the public offer for 40,000 bonus points after spending $3,000.
  • The United Explorer Card offer at the local Chase bank branch offers 50,000 miles after $2,000 in spending. While this is not as good as the online targeted offer, it is better than the publicly available offer for only 30,000 miles.
  • Do It For The Points found an offer for the United Club Card that waives the $395 first year annual fee. This offer is available online and appears to be targeted.

Chase Ultimate Rewards is also transfer partner of United Airlines, my favorite mileage program. All three cards will earn valuable United miles. For some ideas on what you can do with United miles, you can check out a few of my posts explaining how we get incredible value from our United miles:

  1. Thank you! I’m finally going to apply for the CSP at the end of the month. I just opened a checking account with Chase and my personal banker calls me regularly to make sure I’m satisfied. I’ll give her a call to inquire about the lower minimum spend card.

    1. @Kay: Good luck! Hopefully you can get the offer. You mentioned you’re doing a whole churn so I know freeing up $1000 in spending requirement on the CSP will make it easier!

        1. Update: I walked into a Chase branch, applied, and was automatically approved for the CSP. I did not walk into “my” branch, but was asked for my chase debit card. The only extra pieces of info the Chase associate needed were my mother’s maiden name and my annual gross income.

  2. Thanks for doing the legwork for us! I don’t have a Chase banking account so not sure if I will qualify for these offers, but the lower spending requirement on CSP isn’t that much of a difference for me that it should matter if they say no. Thanks again!

    1. @Becky: Glad to help! I did verify with the Chase banker that you do not need a Chase checking account for these offers. But of course, the CSP lower spending isn’t a drastic difference, more of a “nice to have” :)

  3. Thanks for the investigative work you did on this one. I’d love to get the Chase Sapphire Preferred with the lower $2,000 minimum spend. Ah, I wish there was a Chase branch in Hawaii.

    1. Hehe, I like the term “investigative work” and thanks for the reference on StreetSmartTraveler. :) I actually changed my cell phone offer shots in the post to ones you can download. If you somehow end up with the $3,000 spending CSP and want to ask Chase for a match, feel free to send them copies and say it’s publicly available in bank branches in other states.

  4. Just got a targeted mailing with the same offer parameters. I’m pretty new to the game and didn’t have my next (well, second ever) round of applications scheduled until July. Is this deal good enough that I should check my credit score and pick up the invitation? Thanks for the great post. I’d probably have tossed the mailing if I hadn’t read it! Thanks, a Psych Professor =)

    1. Glad you liked the post, Professor :) I am not sure which offer you are referring to; I assume it’s the United one since I know they’ve been mailing those out. The 65k targeted offer has been around for a while in the targeted form online – I personally got it 6 months ago – and I suspect at the bank, though I don’t know for sure. In my opinion (because I love United miles and use them all the time), it is one of the best offers for a personal card out there in terms of potential value for spending requirement (and Denver is a United hub!). If you are already planning an application round soon or in July, this may be a good card to include, but your credit is a very important asset so don’t do anything you’re uncomfortable with and always exercise caution. I personally do not apply for Chase cards more often than 90 days.

        1. Ah, I should have asked rather than assuming! The CSP $2,000 minimum spending offer is not extremely different from the publicly available offer and that’s been around for a very long time (even in better form before). While again, I can’t guarantee anything about the offer continuing to be available, I wouldn’t say it’s really an “apply immediately!” revelation. I just wanted to make everyone aware of the $2,000 minimum spending offer in case they’re not making a habit of stopping by Chase bank branches and can only find the $3,000 one ;)

          1. Hi Miles Professor, just wanted to post some reconnaissance work inspired by your blog. I know you discuss FlexPerks, and I went to our local USBank branch and saw that they are offering 20,000 FP rather than 17,500 FP that is the standard public offer. No difference in spend that I recall.

          2. Hi Mike, Thank you very much for sharing this! Unfortunately, there are no U.S. Bank branches in New York so I can’t even go investigate the offers there and it’s very useful to have this information. I will be posting some further ‘recon’ missions. :)

    1. Thanks for posting about the first year free on Club Card :) The offers actually are displayed on a large nicely laminated sheet and I doubt they change often as they’d have to mass-produce the large laminated sheet.

      1. Thanks. Do you think Chase will match the offer for CSP if I were to send them a secure message?

        1. From my experience, Chase is quite good at matching as long as you got the card within the past 90 days. If you already have the CSP, download my screenshot and say you learned of a better offer that is available at the local bank branches and ask them to match. They had no issue matching the better offer for my Marriott Rewards card. Good luck and let me know how it goes :)

  5. I applied for the CSP at my local branch in LA and got the same offer that you got. This was about a week ago.

  6. I was at my local Chase branch last week to get some documents notarized and while waiting I did see a sign regarding the CSP promo of spend 2k within 3 months to get 40k points.

  7. Went to my San Francisco Chase bank and spoke to the greeter, a Relationship Manager, who confirmed that YES they do have offers that are better than the public ones. Like another commnenter had posted, I was shown a series of offers on plasticized cards, so these are obviously meant for a “longer” term use. Included was the CHASE UNITED EXPLORER offer that I was looking for, the one with the 50k bonus, 5k for an additional card holder and another 10k for spending $25k in a year; 1st yr fee waived, etc…

These offers were NOT on public display but at the Relationship Mgr’s desk. There were also INK BOLD (50k bonus) and Chase Sapphire offers too, but I didn’t make note of what the CSP offer was as I already have a CSP. She encouraged me to get an INK card too if I was interested in mileage bonuses, but I can’t handle the spend requirements for 2 new cards at once.

I checked once I got home and sure enough, I have a new United Explorer card linked to my account. NOW, the big question is whether I will get the mileage bonus as I have previously had a United Chase card previously and usually the bonus is for new customers only. We’ll see. At least it won’t cost me anything for the first year.

Thanks Miles Prof!! for the great tip. I’ll report back if I DO or DON”T get the bonus points which unfortunately, will take a couple of months to find out as the miles won’t post until I meet the $2k spend and per the disclosure, the miles won’t post for 6-8 wks.

    1. UPDATE – my 50k bonus just posted to my account! So, this is the 2nd time I’ve been able to earn the UAL Explorer Visa bonus sign-up bonus.
NOTE – I haven’t had the Explorer card for over a year before re-applying AT THE BRANCH. As always, “your mileage (no pun intended) may vary”. My guess is that I probably would not have gotten this 2nd sign-up bonus if I had applied online instead of having gone to the branch.

  8. Thanks for your great work. You inspired me to check today as well. The right side of that United offer above was for the club card with the fee waived, so if you apply in branch seems you don’t have to be an elite member. If you provide your email or another forum to upload it, I can send a pic I took of the offer.

  9. Was looking to get a CSP card but decided to walk into a physical branch to see if they offered something more lucrative. I thought it might have been possible to get more points (CSP offered 50k points some time ago) or a lower spending threshold. Lo and behold I was able to get the 2k requirement as seen in your photo. A nice benefit was that the rep at the bank was able to rush the card and I got it very early in the morning two days later (just in time for the weekend!)

  10. Hello Professor, wanted to let you and your readers know that I was approved today at my local Chase branch in Dallas for the CSP at the $2K spend in 3 months for 40K UR points as you described. I just thought you’d like to have a September 2013 update to show that this offer is alive and well and many local Chase branches. One thing my Chase bank rep did mention off-hand that I found interesting was that CC approvals are much more likely at branches than online because “you are here” as he eloquently put it. So for those with borderline credit ratings, this is a better option that applying online.

  11. Hi Professor,
This was a great tip that is still working. The best online offer I could find was for 30,000 United points. I do not have any Chase branches where I live in the Panhandle of Florida, but I was on a trip to NYC this past weekend and stoped into a Manhatten branch. They hooked me up with a 50,000 point offer! Sure, my wife got mad at me because I made here wait 15 minutes while I applied, but I just blamed it on you! (j/k).
    Thanks for the great work.
