How to Transfer Citi ThankYou Points Between Accounts
I’ve been going through my Citi ThankYou points at full speed lately booking flights to Florida and California this fall. That’s why, when I needed a flight to Miami in a few weeks, I was 7,000 points short. Fortunately, a friend of mine offered to help me out. She had a few extra Cit ThankYou points sitting around and was happy to loan them to me so I could book my trip. I like using Citi ThankYou points for my flights. To the airline, it’s no different than paying with cash. These tickets earn miles and are eligible for any elite status upgrades. Normally, transferring miles between accounts with most frequent flyer programs incurs transfer fees, making the value of the transferred miles significantly less valuable. You generally want to avoid transferring miles between accounts unless you just need a few to top up for a big award. But Citi ThankYou points are not miles and these points are completely different.
Members of Citi ThankYou points rewards programs can transfer the points between accounts completely for free. The only restriction is that the transferred points need to be used within 90 days. This makes combining points for rewards very easy.
We can also take advantage of the fact that not all Cit ThankYou points are equal. Points with the Citi ThankYou Preferred or Citi ThankYou card are worth just 1 cent each toward flights. Yet Citi ThankYou points with the Citi ThankYou Premier card are worth 1.33 cents each toward flights. Because my Citi ThankYou accounts are linked, I can redeem every point at 1.33 cents when booking my airfare.
